Visitors are the heart of this web site.
Nothing could be accomplished without them.
5945 unique visits were recorded between August 1998 and March 17 2002 on the Legacy site

In March 2002, to offer a faster access, and a Gurley Community & Town History web

Hi all! I never heard of your town until now. My "branch" of the Gurleys came
from the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks, settled in the 1850s, I believe. I've never been to

Hello,
There is a Colonial Pipeline meeting this coming Thursday Feb. 28th at 7:00 p.m. It will
be held at Blanche School, located in southern Lincoln Co. (You can email me for
directions.) We want everyone who is interested in fighting this pipeline at this meeting.
Several key officials will be present. This is a very important meeting for both ALABAMA
and TENNESSEE. We want anyone in Madison, Limestone, Lincoln, Giles, Marshall (AL and TN),
and Blount County to attend. It will be an educational meeting to get more people involved
and well as to voice our opinions about the situation. We need as many people as possible
at this meeting to show the officials we are serious. We want to be heard and let people
know this will affect everyone whether they are in the immediate path or not. Please pass
this along to anyone who might be interested. I hope to see you there!
Sincerely,

Hi Y'all,
I attended the meeting in Florence about the TVA Golf Course. The group called TrailSavers
is not against economic development but is against the site that has been chosen for the
Golf Course. All they want is help, help, help in convincing TVA to not allow RSA to take
this 650 acre reserve. The group is having an orientation hike Feb 10 at 2 pm in florence.
Below is the link to their website. Wild Alabama has given notice that they will file
suit. Also there will be two TVA meetings :
February 11, 2002 5-8pm, at Northwest-Shoals Community College- public meeting with TVA
for collecting concerns and comments
Feb. 12, 2002 5-8pm, at the University of North Alabama- public meeting with TVA for
collecting concerns and comments
What we need is quick action to get the State Sierra Club opposed to TVA giving the land
to RSA, a massive letter writing campaign, and unity. Please inform all others you can to
go to the website below and get the contacts and read the stuff and write letters.
Bronner, RSA, is trying to push this through by March

Mr. Leach,
I came upon your web page from doing research on the colonial pipeline. I have a hectic
schedule, so I havent had much time to follow the events. Recently though, it was
brought to my attention that the proposed route is to go straight through my
relatives farm and dangerously close to my farm in TN. We do not want this private
company taking over our land to send an environmentally hazardous pipeline through the
area for the further development of this region. I am highly irritated that
this private company may try to use the Power of Eminent Domain to pass
through the property of people who do not want such a hazardous pipeline and definitely
will not benefit from this act. We know this pipeline will cause a huge danger to those in
the community as well as to the environment around us from just reviewing history. This
company has a horrific record of oil spills and shady business practices. Therefore we
need to be aware of their plans and always be one step ahead of them at all times. I am
not sure yet on whom is in charge in Tennessee, but I do know from what I have observed
that you have done a great here in Alabama. I would like some pointers on how to thwart
their efforts in building this pipeline. I feel that this is company encroaching on our
rights and forcing us to comply with their wants. I do not want this pipeline in my
community, and I will to whatever it takes to make sure their plans do not become a
reality. Please inform me of how I can find out the current status of this situation and
how I can stop this disaster from taking place.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth

The Alabama Environmental Council has set up a legal fund to raise money so we can hire
Frank Fly, an attorney who has succesfully fought Colonial and won.
The account is called Stop Colonial Pipeline Fund and that is who you can make the checks payable to. Frank Fly wants a 5,000 dollar retainer to do the work.
I am planning on calling him to find out exactly what we can expect from him. You can
send the checks to Lynn Leach 307 Shooting Star Tr. Gurley AL 35748
I will keep everyone posted on a weekly basis of the amount in the account. Please post

We need to stop Colonial now because of the added terrorist threats a gas pipeline and

We are talking about 200 concerned citizens giving 25.00 each.
This is something I know we can do.

"Un saludo de amor y solidaridad para ustedes hermanos en la fe y en el sufrimiento."
A greeting of love and solidarity to all of you brothers in faith and suffering.
We greatly feel the occurrences of today; We feel it in our hearts and it hurts us so much, the innocent people did not have time to ask themselves "Why us?" We are able to understand your pain, because it is the same pain and helplessness that we have suffered day to day in our country; and we always have the same prayer on our lips.
How much longer Lord? I believe after seeing the tragedy on our screens the heart feels it can't endure such injustice, it is the same that has happened to us in the fight that burdens and confronts our faith each day. Today you all are able to cry for yourselves and for us because we are suffering the same.
We pray that the Lord hastens his return the same as the early church prayed Maranatha, come Lord and this supplication for his return is not a supplication of a fanatic or offended, it is the supplication for the Justice of God that will establish a moral order and good in the world.
We love you and believe me from us as part of your family in the faith this had been a difficult day. We are praying for you.
In the Love of the Lord,
[Rev.] Luz Marina de Montoya [Pereira, Colombia]

TAKE ACTION It's time to let the Department of Energy know that more subsidies to the oil and gas industry are unwarranted. Send your comments to DOE by AUGUST 30 from http://www.wilderness.org/takeaction/?step=2&item=603, or tell DOE directly, in response to its questions:
** Is Federal financial support needed in all sectors of the oil and gas industry? ** No. There is no need to subsidize corporations that are raking in record profits. Those huge profits should allow them to invest in oil and gas research without a government handout.
** What actions should be taken to promote global competitiveness? ** Investing more in conservation and energy efficiency. For every dollar's worth of goods and services produced in the U.S., the U.S. consumes 40% more energy than other industrialized nations. If the U.S. economy operated as efficiently as those of Europe and Japan, American energy consumption would fall by about 30%, making us more competitive.
** Are there research areas not being addressed? ** Instead of propping up mature industries like oil and gas, investing in renewable energy, conservation, and energy efficiency research would help create and support emerging markets, and would be a more efficient use of tax dollars. Investing in this research will generate significant public benefits, including lower energy bills for families, less pollution and a cleaner environment, and less reliance on imported oil. Government investment in conservation and efficiency is warranted because oil and gas companies have little incentive to conduct this research themselves. Finally, research and monitoring of environmental impacts associated with past and future oil and gas exploration, including water issues, habitat fragmentation, erosion, etc., is needed.

Hi Everyone,
I want you all to call Sandra Moon and Bill Cling and thank them because tonight at the Huntsville City Council Meeting, they will be introducing a resolution to the State Legislature to repeal the Eminent Domain law that relates to gas pipelines. Here is your chance to come out in support of them as well as lobby Richard Showers to support it.
Here is your golden opportunity to see where Senator Jeff Enfinger stands. Will he stand with the people of this state who find it an outrage that Colonial pipeline, a private for profit corporation can condemn their land for their own gains. Will he continue to look at his job as a state senator as another means of increasing his personal wealth? Many of the other legislatures are afraid to cross him because of his close rapport with Gov. Seigleman.
If he does not support this resolution in the legislature it will be clear he does not represent his constituents only himself and his cronies at the Airport Authority where he use to hold a position.
Please call him tomorrow and ask him where he stands.
Please circulate this e-mail freely.
We the people, will prevail and we will change the Alabama Constitution in the process.

Hi Everyone, The next AEC meeting is on Wed. Sept. 12th at the Heritage Bank on Balmoral
off of Airport at 7:00pm.
Hear what's new about Colonial pipeline and what you can do to continue the fight.
I just got through to APT and a reporter will be doing a story on Colonial in Sept. I will keep you posted. Please call Bud Cramer's office and ask him what the date and place for the town meeting about Colonial pipeline will take place. I've also got in touch with Craig Kneisel, the head guy under Richard Pryor, Attorney general.
I'm waiting for a call back from him to talk about the misuse of Eminent Domain. I've also got a call in for a copy of the lawsuit filed by the Justice Dept and EPA against Colonial.
Hang in there and we might beat them yet!!

I just stumbled onto your page. Unfortunately, like most folks in this town, I stay pretty
busy with the mundane things in life like raising a family and paying taxes. Although I've
heard bits and pieces about the proposed pipeline, I've not been involved. That is about
to change.
I feel that we're being railroaded into this by those who feel "growth" is good
for the area.
When the question "Who gains and at what cost?" is asked I think the answer
becomes apparent.
Although the proposed pipeline will not be crossing my property, I feel very strongly that
I do not want it in my community.
How can I find out what the current status of this is?
Has an environmental impact study been conducted?
What can I do to thwart Colonial's efforts?
Thanks in advance for info you can send my way.

I enjoyed looking at your Gurley site. I was told that my Great Grandfather once was
pastor at either the Presbyterian or Methodist, church listed on your page.
Are there records to show which one it might have been?
His name was Neily Robert French.
Thank you,

My great-great grandfather, David Moore, married Mary W. Hamblen (Hamblin) (Hambin) in
Limestone County, Alabama, in 1842. At the time of the 1850 census, they were residing in
Madison County, Alabama, with their first three children. Do you have any information on
the Moore family for which the town of Mooresville was apparently named?
